Underground line 5

The H5 HÉV trains operating between Batthyány tér and Szentendre form the backbone of public transport in North Buda and the Szentendre agglomeration. The rolling stock still in service on the line is several decades old and consists predominantly of multiple-unit trains manufactured and put into service between 1975 and 1983. The line’s inner terminus was established in connection with the construction of the Batthyány tér station of metro line M2. Today, the maintenance of the railway infrastructure requires daily interventions, while full accessibility is not ensured along the line. Planning for the renewal of the line began as early as 2006, with CÉH zRt. designing the reconstruction of seven stations on the Békásmegyer–Szentendre section, as well as the modernisation of the traction power substation in Pomáz. The stations affected by the design work will also serve as future stops on the northern section of the planned M5 metro line.
