South Lake Balaton railway stations

Along the southern shore of Lake Balaton, we prepared the renewal of the passenger buildings and immediate surroundings of 13 railway stations. The aim was to create buildings that meet current operational and passenger service requirements, while ensuring accessibility throughout the buildings and their immediate surroundings.

Working in consortium with UNITEF'83 Zrt., our responsibilities included preparing the concept, permitting and construction design documentation, as well as providing professional support for the tender documentation. In addition to the station buildings, the design covered the forecourts, pedestrian connections, parking areas, bicycle storage facilities, passenger information systems and landscaping.

The different architectural character, technical condition and transport role of the locations required an individual approach at each station. Where the existing buildings could be adapted effectively, we designed their refurbishment and internal reconfiguration. Where the size, condition or functional layout of the existing building called for a different solution, we prepared the design of a new, modern and easy-to-maintain station building.

The first completed locations under the programme were Balatonszéplak-felső and Balatonfenyves. At Balatonszéplak-felső, a new passenger building was constructed on the site of the former building, while at Balatonfenyves the existing station building underwent a comprehensive refurbishment and internal reconfiguration. At both locations, the station forecourts were reorganised and made accessible, bicycle storage facilities were improved, and the passenger information systems were modernised. The buildings were equipped with solar panels and heat-pump-based heating and cooling systems.

While applying a consistent design approach, we developed a solution for each location that responded to the existing building, passenger traffic and the surrounding settlement, while also meeting the requirements defined by the Client, MÁV. The aim was to create well-organised, easy-to-use arrival points that support rail transport and connect naturally to the settlements along Lake Balaton.
