Gellért-hegy Public Park Feasibility Study

Gellért Hill was one of the first inhabited areas of today’s capital. Its height and its location opposite the inner city make it a defining element of the cityscape as a whole.

Over the past decades, due to maintenance works being postponed or limited as a result of insufficient funding, the condition of Gellért Hill’s vegetation has been deteriorating at an accelerating pace, while the infrastructure serving visitors is also falling into disrepair. The restoration of the Citadella affected a cityscape-significant, but relatively small, part of Gellért Hill; the remaining extensive areas of the hill fall far short of today’s requirements and expectations in terms of quality and services.

After the turn of the millennium, several initiatives were launched to improve the situation, either in the form of design competitions or feasibility and study assignments. An urban development competition was also announced, in which our company successfully participated.

Within the framework of the new assignment, CÉH zRt., as an experienced designer of complex developments affecting large areas, was responsible as general designer for coordinating the comprehensive assessment of Gellért Hill’s existing condition. Following the documentation of the existing conditions, proposals had to be developed in the fields of urban planning, heritage protection, architecture, transport and public utility infrastructure in order to lay the groundwork for the necessary developments.

The feasibility study was prepared as the starting document for the planned landscape design competition. The competition was ultimately not launched due to organisational changes on the client’s side.
